Damn Straight!

As some of you may already know I am not an "O.P.I. girl".  I admit it.  I don't like their polish.  At the risk of loosing half my readers I have to lay it all out there y'all.  I am just not into it.
There is a special mix of factors that converge into my near hatred of the brand.  First and most importantly, they are SHEER.  Plain and simple, the majority of their polishes  require too many coats.  They CHIP.  Yeah, they do.  When I try out a polish I always try it naked, by naked I mean no base coat no top coat, just plain.  The longest an OPI has lasted on me is about 5 hours without chipping.  For a brand to rely upon the consumer to purchase base and top coats in order to make their product work correctly, or in their case, at ALL, is bullshit.
Now with all that out of the way here is the twist that really makes me dislike OPI.  They have this superiority complex attitude about them. And even with all the short comings of the brand they are WAY overpriced.  People act as though they are without flaw. Seriously, it ticks me off that OPI is regarded so highly despite it's many downfalls as though they don't exist.  Hell, some people will only wear OPI in the same way that spoiled actors will only drink a certain kind of bottled water. I call Bullshit!
In my opinion it's a brand thing.  Just like Doc Martins in high school, people all "love" OPI only because everyone else they respect "loves OPI".  It's like Marlboro light cigarettes, and 1996 Mustangs.  The problem here is Mustangs aren't COOL, they are retarded,  just like OPI.  My advice to you is to get a Trans Am and some Nfu-oh, playa.  A vette would be better, but hey I can't afford the Chanel polish to go with it.
Now there is ALWAYS an exception to every rule, and my personal exception to the "OPI sucks ass" rule is the OPI designer series.  Specifically OPI DS Glamour.  It is the ONLY OPI I have ever desired.  It is a COBALT blue HOLO people!!! How could I resist it no-matter what brand it is!
Simply Gorgeous. This was 3 coats and it chipped in only 3 hours but HEY I'll suck it up for JUST THIS ONE TIME.  Besies, the "DS" in "DS glamour" stands for "Damn Straight" in my universe. OPI Damn Straight series, it is just way cooler.

Oh yeah, one more thing. the shape of the OPI bottle makes it collect dust. That annoys me.

  2. God, thank God SOMEONE had the balls to call bullshit! I get pissed bc everyone falls all over OPI also. When was their last awesome collex? Summer for Shore. In 2003!!!!!! Bullshit! And they chip on me almost immediately. And hahaha get a trans am! LOOOOOOVE IT! You're my new hero hahaha

  3. Ah, Glamour is on my lemming list, I've been unable to find it ... DS Fantasy is a nice blue but missing the holo-goodness. One day I'll have a bottle of this =)

  4. LOLOLOLOL!!! I couldn't agree with you more...I do have a few OPIs in my collex,(5 reg bottles - 2 were gifts and 3 minis) but only because the colors are amazing, and I've never understood their price.
Perhaps it is because that is mostly all you see in the 10 million Vietnamese nail salons (no slander on the Vietnamese, just speakin the truth for California) and so people think it's a good brand to buy...since it's in all the salons! But maybe it's in all the salons so you'll keep coming back for another polish change or manicure!
But I too cannot resist the "Damn Straight" Series. Is it ok if I get the new Challenger or the new Camaro instead? (of course, around here it's ALL about the BMW or the Mercedes...so I wanna stick out!)

  5. I have a couple of OPI's I like - but tbh I'm never gigantically impressed with their range of colours, especially when there are so many more exciting options!

This OPI is mighty purty though.

  6. I have a single OPI - Grape Fit.
I am very happy with my Misas, Bourjois, Nails Inc, BB Couture, Milani, whatever...
I don't hate OPI but it's way WAY too expensive and the big brush would be better for applying emulsion to walls!
Glamour is lovely but IRL it won't be quite as luscious as in the macro shots. If I had to pick one brand only it would be Misa.

  7. Damn Straight! Looks killer on your great nails!

  8. Ah! I see u caved in too and bought the DS polishes! I paid an exorbitant amt for my bottle of DS glamour. U're right abt OPI, it's definitely watery. But i've heard some pple think the wateriness makes it easier to apply on the nails. And yes. OPI chips like crazy. I apply base coat & topcoat but still the longest OPI has lasted without chipping is 3 days. horrible. To be honest, OPI is the most well known (and also the easiest to find) polish brand, that's why they've got a 'superiority complex' so to speak. The range of colors is impressive but the polish itself is more or less the same as any other polish i can get my hands on. :)

  9. I want this polish SO BAD. It has to be my biggest lemming... where did you find it??

  10. I'm not a big fan of OPI either (way too overhyped and overpriced), but let's be truthful. They don't chip any more or any less than any other "high-end" brand. And they're definitely not all sheer. I don't think I own an OPI polish bottle than needs more than two coats. LOL Are we being a bit biased here, Ms. TheManicuredManatee? :P
Now don't get me started on Rescue Beauty Lounge though... Elitists.

  11. That holo is beautiful! I like OPI because the brush works better for me and they don't chip on me, but I use lots of other brands too. I hate how half of their collections are reds though. I am so sick of OPI Reds, they all look the same!

  12. I don't have problems with OPI myself, though the (small) majority of my collection is probably made up of China Glaze. I do have a good number of OPI bottles in there.and I get pretty good wear with them (I wear base and top coat with everything though). Their colours are not always the most exciting, that's for sure. OPI, Essie, ChG, Misa, Color Club, Rimmel, Finger Paints, SH.... I love them all! ;)

  13. Oh yes, Glamour is so pretty it hurts! :D

  14. Oh my God that was hilarious. I was giggling through reading your entire post. I agree, for the most part. I'm just really fond of the OPI brush. I don't know that OPI chips on me more than any other brand. I shelled out God-knows-how-much money for some Rescue Beauty Lounge, and it too chipped on me within two days. I seem to be alone there, though.

Also, DS=Damn Straight...you are hilarious, madam. Hilarious.

  15. OPI put out a coffee table book some years ago. I worked at a salon/spa at the time, and one day I read it when I was bored. Did you know that they started out selling dental products? They started selling dental acrylic & enamel to nail salons, which I think might be illegal. So really they entered the nail biz by accident, and with some catchy names they made it to the top. I used to be an OPI ho, but I've moved on and now it's all about China Glaze!

  16. LOL! I totally agree with you, lately the more Ive been into polish the more I love ZOYA and China Glaze..they rock! hands down, but you are right, there are some OPI's that you have to say ES too! and the DS series, is one!

  17. There's nothing like a good holo and some bad words together in one post. In spite of OPI's notorious poopyness, I'm currently waiting for this very polish to pop into my mailbox.

Oh, and have you tried DS Extravagance? Because it's pants-shittingly good.

  18. Ugh... that colour sure looks worth it!
Good (rare) news! My Absolutely Alice took 1 day to chip! HAH! ;P

  19. ROFLMAO - that is too funny! I agree they charge too much for the quality but sadly the market as a whole supports them.

Thanks so much for the chuckle! I definitely needed it!!

  20. Hello danielle, i will be stealing "pants shittingly good" asap. I LOfuckinLed

  21. On OPI: WERD. The thing that pisses me off the most though are the bottles. I hate their bottles--why must they be so clunky and round and take up so much space and thick and collect dust? And I hate their brush. And I hate their attitude (but not as much as Lippmann's, so I guess I'll deal).

But. That polish? That is gorgeous. Daaaamn straight.

  22. HAhahaha your posts crack me up so much! I don't hate OPI (I have 2 polishes) but I don't get the massive craziness over them too.
Also all the Suzi names are so annoying!

  23. Best post ever! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about OPI. But what I really glad to hear about is that it is possible for a polish to stand up on it's own without base/top coat. I hope you can do a post on polishes you feel stand up to this test.

  24. Gah! Another lemming! I was wondering what the fuss was about for many of the OPI colors. I have a few I like but I'm not what you'd call a fanatic. Still, Glamour makes a strong case for a spur-of-the-moment purchase (if I can find it!)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with you on OPI! I hate their bottles, brush, wear, and unoriginal colors, but ocassionally they have some nice colors. The names make me gag though.

  26. Wow. My sides are hurting from laughing so hard! Witty post, I enjoyed it :P

  27. Holy crap that was funny, another vote for best post :)

I have a few OPIs and love most of them although a couple are too watery and a PITA to get on right. I don't have chipping issues cause I seem to be a freak! NP never chips off my nails, ever! I'll get tipwear after a few hours or more if I'm lucky but nary a chip in sight even after days.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love your post! Too funny! But personally I LIKE OPI. I can't say I love them. I think they are way overpriced. I don't mind spending $4 or $5 on them, but that is about it. But personally I have good experience with OPI. I was wearing Lucky Lucky Lavendar without so much as a chip for 4 days. They work really well for me. I just don't see them being creative. But they have that berry pink and red down. HA!

I actually got an OPI for my blogs give-away because I thought that is what everyone likes. I wish I knew that first. I was going to get China Glaze, but didn't want to "cheapen" the prize! I should have contacted you first! HA!

  29. LMAO! You know what, it was so funny, going through reading your post and seeing the gorgeous swatches right along side it. I JUST went through this with Extravagance! I HAD to have it. I am so not impressed with them in general, and here we go, I bought it anyway - and it is stunning. It chipped in a couple hours and I wasn't even working.
Darn it, now I want DS Glamour.

  31. Err, had to redo this comment, lol. So, how do you REALLY feel about OPI? Sorry, just had to ask. ;) But you know, I share your view. You basically said everything I would to say to someone if they were to ask me how I felt about OPI. :D This is my first visit to your blog (via Dr Frankenpolish) and I love it. /bookmarked

  32. Wonderful OPI! I'm fairly new to polishes and bought several OPIs and started to wonder if I'm the only one having troubles with them! Thanks for the straight words!

By the way: First time around your blog - great! Really like it, will go straight up to my blogroll!

  33. I own 3 OPIs. Mad as a Hatter, Absolutely Alice, and My Private Jet. That's it. $9 is insane. Yeah, sheer as HELL!!! I am totally a China Glaze and drugstore/Target/Walmart polish chick.

    ReplyDelete
  34. LOL! Great post! :D I totally understand you! What is all the fuss about, really? My first OPI was DS Signature, it's a decent holo, but it literally disappears off my nails in a day. I've never seen anything like that, not even with the cheapest no-name minis. :D

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOL! Awesome rant. Even if I myself do love OPI. But I have my HG base and top coat combo that works with every brand so I never have a problem with stuff chipping. I personally find Essie to be a terribly sheer brand but they do have some gems for example that keep me from hating the brand haha. OPI's got some great colors out there, you shouldn't give up on them just yet.
